What is Sombo?

It seems a strange sight to the traditional ‘gi’ wearer of Judo, Aikido and Karate to see people wrestling in what appears to be a Judo jacket and shorts. The Russian ‘jacket wrestling’ art of ‘Sombo’ (Sambo to the Russians) has a long and varied history, incorporating many of the East European and Asian grappling and striking arts. It was popular in the Soviet Union, gradually seeping out to the West and was accelerated when the political barriers came down.
